Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a well known disease associated with premature babies. With advances in medicine, the survival rate of extremely premature babies has increased over time.
Consequently, the number of children at risk for developing retinopathy of prematurity has grown.
Extremely premature babies are known to be at very high risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). This is a disease that occurs in premature infants and causes blindness if not treated in time. If diagnosed and treated in time, the baby will have normal vision in more then 95% of cases. It is important that premature babies' eyes are examined until they have developed mature eyes, when they are no longer at risk for developing retinopathy of prematurity.
To make the diagnosis a well trained pediatric ophthalmologist must use special lenses and head gear and other instruments that require, among other things, a steady hand, dexterous fingers, good vision and clear thinking. It is best if the examination is done with an assistant in order to aid in holding the baby’s head steady.
There are many potential reasons for missed cases of ROP, including examination of the wrong baby, improper charting, inadequate examination, and even the failure to provide the parent or guardian with proper instructions for follow up eye examinations after discharge from the hospital. Whatever the reason may be, missed cases of ROP should not occur if proper care is recommended and given.
